New captain america john walker11/11/2023 He's not fully comfortable in the role but is still willing to serve as a propaganda tool. The MCU's version of John Walker is being carefully presented as a much more sympathetic figure. He was utterly unsuited for this role, suffering from a brutal, unstable streak, and in the end, Steve had to step in to stop him. When Steve Rogers quit as Captain America, appalled at the corruption he saw in American politics, John Walker was the government's choice to succeed him. He was definitely more of a villain than a hero, calling himself the Super-Patriot, and encouraging Battlestar to fake attacks on his rallies in order to show off his heroism. Walker believe Steve Rogers to be an outdated symbol, a man who lived in the America of the past, not the present, and he made his point forcefully. In the comics, Walker and his sidekick Battlestar were subjected to illegal super-soldier serum by the Power Broker, and they subsequently launched a campaign against Captain America. Everybody has now turned their back on him, which is very dangerous to do to a person like that who now has super soldier serum in his veins.Marvel Studios has rewritten John Walker's origin story in the MCU in order to make this point. They've used him, and he feels used, and doesn't feel understood. "He cared and he fought for them and he loved it, but now they've taken it. "He only ever knew one family-and that was the United States Military," Russell says. Oh, and you know-there's the whole super-soldier serum thing. In the rest of our interview with Russell, he teased that Walker could go a tad berserk after the government stripped him of his decorations with no veteran's benefits. But if Russell does return to the MCU, we can guess he'll probably continue to wreak havoc on Sam and Bucky's corner of the universe. But it's hard to see the MCU not continuing the story of John Walker, considering the efforts of MCU JLD to construct a Dark Avengers-esque super-team. Of course, Russell is deflecting the will-you-show-up-again question a little bit here. I’m not a part of any of this decision making, obviously.” Russell says: “Marvel operates in a really cool way where they don’t make decisions before they see what works. It’s possible that if fans don’t wind up connecting with Walker on any level, he won’t return at all. Agent.įrom Vanity Fair: Russell himself sounds ambivalent about whether John Walker comes back at all: “Part of the way I approached Marvel was it’s all your last time you’re going to do it.” If this scene with the Contessa is setting Walker up for something specific, Russell is in the dark about it. Which would be fairly surprising considering that in the season finale, Julia Louis-Dreyfus's Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine gave him a black suit and called him the U.S. So it's not surprising that, in a new interview with Vanity Fair, Russell was candid about the possibility that we'd never see John Walker in the MCU again. The guy charts his own hero-turned semi-villain journey. That's all to say: Wyatt Russell isn't too concerned with buddying up to the fans.
